Microsoft Zune HD

At the D: All Things Digital (D7) conference, or summit (whichever you prefer), Microsoft finally unveiled its new touchscreen music player, the ZuneHD. As hands-on previews come online, we get a sense of what Microsoft’s going for in this generation of the device.

At first glance, you’ll notice that the ZuneHD has an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display. This paper-thin display is some of the newest technology recently featured at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), back in January. In addition the ZuneHD features built-in WiFi, an accelerometer, full HD output (yum!), Internet Explorer for full internet browsing, an built-in HD radio receivier and more. Microsoft was sure to jump on the App Store bandwagon and create its own application storefront called Marketplace. Oh, and lets not forget that the ZuneHD will hook up to “Xbox LIVE to create a game-changing entertainment experience.”

And lets be clear, the ZuneHD is ultra-sexy. Gizmodo even went on to say that “the device is tighter and more physically beautiful than the iPod Touch and it’s got a better UI [...].” The animations and transitions are beautiful. I’m even digging it’s super contemporary, and rather simple, interface. Hit up the read button for a brief hands-on video of some guys fondling Microsoft’s prototype.

The OLED screen boasts a resolution of 480×272 and is in a 16:9 widescreen format. It allows the users to comfortably flip through music, moves and other content and also offers a much better viewing experience on the go. The Zune HD also allows you to playback supported HD video files direct to an HD TV in 720p with the help of a premium HDMI audiovisual docking station which is sold separately.

The Zune HD has a built-in HD radio receiver which allows the user to tune in radio with quality that is much better than traditional radio quality. You get additional songs and artist data broadcast and also additional HD radio channels such as HD2 and HD3 for additional programming.
